The Permanent Mission of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations and International Organisations in Geneva helped organise the official launch of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) report, prepared in partnership with Oman’s Social Protection Fund, entitled “Redesigning Oman’s Social Protection System”.
The launch took place during a high level event hosted at the Maison de la Paix in Geneva. held under the patronage of Professor Dr Mohad Baawain, Minister of Labour, and Gilbert Houngbo, Director-General of the International Labour Organisation. It was attended by Ministers, Ambassadors, senior officials, representatives of international organisations, experts, academics and diplomats.
The launch of the report represents international recognition of Oman’s pioneering experience in redesigning its social protection system through an integrated approach that combines social protection, social insurance, financial sustainability and economic development, in line with international best practices and standards.
The event highlighted Oman’s key achievements in this field, including the consolidation of 11 pension funds into a single unified fund and the expansion of social protection coverage to encompass all stages of life.
Participants commended Oman’s experience as an advanced model for the development of modern social protection systems. The Director-General of the International Labour Organisation expressed his appreciation for Oman’s significant achievements and noted the importance of the report in documenting a pioneering development experience that can serve as a reference at both the regional and international levels.
