Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi met Paulo Rangel, Minister of State and Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic, during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The two Ministers exchanged views on regional issues and developments and discussed Portugal’s upcoming non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for the 2027–2028 term.

The two Ministers highlighted the importance of coordinating political and diplomatic efforts to contain escalating crises and reduce tensions by supporting direct dialogue between the parties concerned.

To further cooperation, the Ministers agreed on the importance of increasing exchanges of visits and expertise, developing trade, economic and investment interests, and capitalising on the two countries’ maritime ports, strategic locations and logistics capabilities.

The Minister also met with  Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of the Republic of India.

They discussed regional and international developments and their implications for maritime security, energy supplies and supply chains.

The two Ministers highlighted the importance of continuing diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching practical and consensual solutions to outstanding issues and reducing tensions and escalation in the region.

Sayyid Badr also met Miguel Ángel Moratinos, High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC).

The meeting discussed the fruitful cooperation between Oman and the UNAOC, particularly in promoting a culture of dialogue and understanding among peoples and rejecting hate speech, violence, antisemitism and Islamophobia.

The meeting discussed the Muscat Plan, which aims to strengthen social cohesion, broaden the participation of religious and community leaders and young people in these efforts, and develop partnerships that translate the values of tolerance and mutual respect into practical programmes contributing to peacebuilding, harmony and conflict prevention.
