The Sultanate of Oman is taking part in the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), being held in the city of Busan in the Republic of Korea until July 29.

The session is being attended by representatives of parties to the 1972 Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Oman’s delegation is being led by Amna Salim Al Balushi, Oman’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO.

The UNESCO committee discussed nominations for new sites to be added to the World Heritage List and reports on the conservation of listed sites, in addition to policies and procedures related to the protection and management of World Heritage sites.

The session is also dealing with how to manage risks and disasters, how to handle the effects of climate change and how to activate the role of local communities tasked with protecting heritage.

Oman’s participation in the session stems from its keenness to follow up developments in the implementation of the World Heritage Convention and contribute to the discussion of issues related to the protection and management of World Heritage sites. The aim is to support national efforts aimed at preserving cultural and natural heritage in line with global standards.
