The Sultanate of Oman is taking part in the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which has opened at the United Nations headquarters in New York and will run until May 22.

Oman’s participation is significant as it is chairing the seventh session of the Conference on the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. This reflects the international confidence in the role played by Oman in supporting disarmament efforts and promoting regional and international security.

Ambassador Omar Alkathiri, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations in New York, delivered a statement on behalf of member states participating in the conference. He said that establishing a nuclear weapon free zone in the Middle East is a strategic priority and an urgent necessity to enhance security and stability in the region. The statement focused on the growing challenges facing the disarmament and non proliferation regime, including the continued development of nuclear arsenals and the escalation of rhetoric surrounding their use. Ambassador Alkathiri warned of the implications for international peace and security and highlighted the importance of strengthening multilateral action and reaching consensus to reinvigorate the treaty process.

Oman, in its capacity as chair of the seventh session, also highlighted the need to maintain a comprehensive and non selective consensus based approach in addressing disarmament issues in the region. It called on all Middle East countries to engage constructively in this process to enhance mutual trust and to pave the way for more stable and secure regional arrangements.

Through this active participation, Oman reaffirms its firm commitment to supporting international efforts on disarmament and non proliferation, and to promoting peaceful solutions based on dialogue and mutual understanding, contributing to a more balanced and secure international order.
