The Sultanate of Oman affirmed its commitment to engaging positively and constructively with the mechanisms of the Human Rights Council and with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. It renewed its pledge to continue this approach, rooted in its firm conviction and in the principles enshrined in the Basic Law of the State.
This came in a statement delivered by First Secretary Sara Albalushi of the Permanent Mission of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations and international organisations in Geneva, at the conclusion of the high level segment of the Council’s sixty first session during the general debate.
Oman explained that the review of its national report under the Universal Periodic Review mechanism reflected a high level of positive engagement with this process. It noted that this engagement supports Oman’s efforts to protect, uphold and promote human rights.
Oman pointed out that the United Nations system faces a highly sensitive situation amid a funding crisis that affects its ability to carry out its mandates. This comes at a time when multilateral diplomacy is in decline. It observed that some initiatives are now formulated and managed outside the framework of the organisation, which may negatively affect the effectiveness of collective international action.
Oman underlined the importance of re empowering international institutions to perform their mandated roles, implementing their decisions and strengthening confidence in their effectiveness and credibility, in a way that upholds the principles of justice and the rule of law.
It noted that global development imbalances are among the main causes of conflicts, wars and violations. These imbalances also hinder respect for human rights and the promotion, alongside a decline in the culture of dialogue between states and peoples.
Oman reaffirmed its commitment to advancing dialogue, strengthening stability, supporting regional and international cooperation and resolving disputes through peaceful means. It will continue to invest in its role as a trusted mediator that creates an enabling environment for serious talks and strengthens confidence in sustainable peaceful pathways, contributing to security, stability and prosperity in the Middle East and the wider world.
