Oman organises UN event against non-communicable diseases
Oman, in cooperation with a number of international partners, organised a high-level side event entitled “One Vision.. One Future: Mobilising Global Action to Combat Non-Communicable Diseases for Future Generations” at the United Nations headquarters in New York, on the margins of the 80th session of the General Assembly.
The event opened with a keynote address delivered by Her Highness Dr Mona bint Fahd Al Said, Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor of Sultan Qaboos University for International Cooperation and Chair of the National Committee for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases.
Addressing the event she said: “Oman, like many other countries around the world, bears the burden of non-communicable diseases. These silent but devastating illnesses claim lives, limit individual potential, and place pressure on the very fabric of our societies.”
Her Highness added that Oman fully recognises this challenge and is determined to confront it. “Our efforts are rooted in the conviction that prevention, shaped by the environments we live in, the food we consume, the air we breathe, and the choices influenced by systems that extend beyond the health sector, is both a moral responsibility and an economic necessity, she said. “It brings great benefits to our people and to the future of the coming generations,”she added.
She noted that Oman also recognises that prevention must be complemented by treatment and care, which remain a constant shield for individuals, families and communities already affected. Oman has strengthened its healthcare system to guarantee fairness and universal access to services. Across the country, more than 200 primary healthcare facilities provide care, equipped with essential medicines, diagnostic tools and qualified practitioners, she explained.
Her Highness also mentioned that specialised services address the needs of people living with chronic conditions. Early detection programmes help identify diseases in their initial stages, while community-based initiatives bring healthcare directly to patients, empowering them to live longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives.
