Oman affirms full support for safety of navigation and maritime security
Oman has reaffirmed its full support for the efforts of the UN Security Council and UN initiatives aimed at addressing maritime challenges and threats. It called for strengthened regional and international cooperation to support the safety of navigation and maritime security.
This came in a statement delivered on behalf of Oman by His Highness Sayyid Shihab bin Harib Al Said, First Secretary at Oman’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, before a high-level session held by the Security Council entitled “Maritime Security: Prevention, Innovation and International Cooperation to Address Emerging Challenges”, within the framework of the discussion on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security”.
Oman highlighted the importance it attaches to maritime security in view of the natural resources and geographical factors surrounding it, as well as its strategic location overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for international trade, maritime navigation and global seaborne oil exports.
The statement outlined Oman’s national efforts to enhance the security and safety of maritime navigation, including the efforts that led to a ceasefire agreement between the United States of America and the relevant authorities in Sana’a, Yemen, to ensure freedom of navigation and the smooth flow of international commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
