I am pleased to welcome you to the official page of the Permanent Mission of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva – the Swiss Confederation.

The Permanent Mission represents the interests of the Sultanate of Oman in the United Nations and the other international organisations. It also plays the role of a liaison between the Omani government and the international organisations and permanent missions in Geneva, in a way that highlights the standpoint of the Sultanate of Oman and protects its interests and all that would serve its stability and prosperity.

The Permanent Mission works also to organise and coordinate Omani official delegations’ participation in the work and activities of the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva.

This page allows users to find information about the multilateral relations between the Sultanate of Oman and the international community. It also provides details about the services provided by the Consulate General of the Sultanate of Oman, as well as the Sultanate of Oman's Office to the World Trade Organisation, which are both based at the Permanent Mission headquarters and both work under the supervision of the Permanent Representative.

The Permanent Mission

Since its establishment on 28th August 1974, the Permanent Mission in Geneva has represented the Sultanate of Oman at the United Nations and other international organisations. All its work and activities are based on the directives of Oman's foreign policy.

Permanent Missions were created by the Vienna Convention of 1961, which stated that such missions could contribute to the development of friendly relations between the countries of the world, regardless of any differences in their constitutional and social systems.

The United Nations consists of 193 Member States, of which 181 have Permanent Missions to the United Nations Office in Geneva. The Sultanate of Oman joined the United Nations on 7th October 1971.

Key objectives

The Permanent Mission’s main objectives include:

  • Ensuring that Oman maintains distinctive relations with the United Nations, its specialised agencies, NGOs and Geneva's prominent research centres, universities and institutions.
  • Pursuing along with international partners, the promotion of human rights and peaceful coexistence, as well as aiming to strengthen international security, the peaceful resolution of conflicts and supporting disarmament.
  • Cooperating with the many international organisations interested in and working on health, labour, migration, communications, intellectual property, trade, development and climate change.
  • Promoting, developing, and protecting the interests of Oman and defending its values and principles within the framework of multilateral international diplomacy.

Consulate General

The Consulate General of the Sultanate of Oman was established in Geneva in July, 1977. It offers a wide range of consular services to both Omani citizens visiting the Swiss Confederation and Swiss citizens or residents wishing to visit the Sultanate of Oman as tourists, to work or to study.

Consular services

The Consulate General handles the issue of tourist visas and official missions visas, and the certification of contracts, diplomas and business transactions between the Sultanate of Oman and commercial companies or individuals. It also coordinates with tourism and travel agencies. The Consulate General's services include:

Oman office to World Trade Organisation

The office of the Sultanate of Oman to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) was established on 21st June, 2000. Oman became an official member of the WTO on November 9th, 2000.

Oman's office to the WTO, based at the headquarters of the Permanent Mission, is a link between Oman's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment Promotion and the international organisations in Geneva.

The office's primary role is to represent the interests of Oman in various areas related to trade, development, economy and international cooperation.

Key objectives

The aims of Oman’s mission to the World Trade Organisation include:

  • Defending the interests of the Sultanate of Oman by leading consultations and negotiations at the World Trade Organisation on behalf of the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Investment Promotion and other government agencies.
  • Attending, participating and following-up on the work of specialised trade-related international organistions such as the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Advisory Centre on World Trade Organisation Law (ACWL).
  • Acting as a link between the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion and international organisations by coordinating and providing the necessary technical assistance to the Ministry and other government agencies in the Sultanate.
  • Following-up on the implementation of Oman's WTO commitments as well as following-up on the implementations of the various WTO recommendations enacted during official negotiations, all in coordination with the relevant ministries in the Sultanate of Oman.
