A career diplomat, Mr. Nabil HAJLAOUI comes from the prestigious corps of “Conseiller d’Orient” of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which traditionally includes specialists in Africa and the Arab world. He holds degrees in History and Philosophy from the Sorbonne, as well as an Agregation in Arabic.

He was appointed Ambassador of France to the Sultanate of Oman on July 7, 2024, after serving as Ambassador of France to the United Republic of Tanzania between 2021 and 2024.

Between 2018 and 2021, Mr. Nabil Hajlaoui was Head of the East Africa Department at the Quai d’Orsay, which defines French diplomatic policy and coordinates France’s external action in 11 countries on the east coast of Africa, from Sudan to Tanzania.

Before, Mr. Hajlaoui had held the position of General Consul of France in Egypt, where he was responsible for coordinating French political, economic and cultural influence in the country, as well as promoting and protecting the French community.

During his professional career, which spans more than twenty-five years, Mr HAJLAOUI has held several other diplomatic positions: in particular that of counsellor at the French Embassy in Algeria, where he was in charge of terrorism and regional issues in the Maghreb and Sahel, and that of Chargé de mission to the Director of North Africa and the Middle East at the Quai d’Orsay, where he was in charge of analysing political transformations in the region.

He was also honored in 2010 by the State Department, which welcomed him to Washington as part of the International Visitors Leadership Program. Previously, Mr. HAJLAOUI had devoted several years to teaching, where he held the Chair of Arabic Civilization at the Louis Le Grand School in Paris, and was the author of several publications.

In parallel with his diplomatic and academic career, Mr. HAJLAOUI has collaborated with several French universities and international companies and media (such as France24 and Radio Monte Carlo Doualiya). Mr. HAJLAOUI is also a member of the French Association of Arabists (AFDA) and the “Jefferson Circle” in Paris (which promotes friendly relations between France and the USA), and has held executive responsibilities within the “Association des diplomates du cadre d’Orient” at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Nabil HAJLAOUI was appointed Knight of the National Order of Merit by decree of the President of the French Republic on May 19, 2018.
