Oman at international conference on settlement of the Palestinian question
The Sultanate of Oman participated in the International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question and the implementation of the two-state solution, held within the framework of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Oman's delegation was headed by Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi.
The conference resulted in the adoption of the “New York Declaration,” which was endorsed by 142 countries in the United Nations General Assembly. This declaration affirmed the international commitment to the two-state solution and charted an irreversible path to building a better future for Palestinians, Israelis, and all peoples of the region. It called on the international community to translate its positions into practical and tangible actions.
A statement issued by the conference presidency, noting the worsening humanitarian tragedy in Gaza and the escalation of the Israeli ground offensive, said the New York Declaration offers a principled and realistic alternative to the cycle of violence. It welcomed the recognition of the State of Palestine by new countries, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Portugal, Malta, and France.
The statement emphasised that ending the war in Gaza and ensuring the release of all hostages remains a top priority. It called for a permanent ceasefire, the release of hostages and prisoner exchanges. It also called for access to humanitarian aid to be ensured, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Strip.
The statement also included a commitment to support the deployment of a temporary international stabilisation mission, at the invitation of the Palestinian Authority and mandated by the Security Council, as well as a commitment to enhance the training and equipment of Palestinian security forces. It emphasised the importance of the unification of the West Bank and Gaza Strip under the umbrella of the Palestinian Authority, welcoming the policy of “one state, one government, one law, and one weapon.”
The statement called for support for the “Emergency Coalition in Support of Palestine” to mobilise urgent funding for the Palestinian Authority's budget, and demanded that Israel release withheld Palestinian tax revenues and work to review the Paris Protocol on Economic Relations.
It also called on Israel to declare a clear commitment to the two-state solution and to halt settlement activity, land confiscation, and annexation, emphasising that any form of annexation constitutes a red line for the international community and would have serious consequences.
The statement added that ending the Israeli occupation and achieving a just and lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis is the only way to achieve full regional integration, in accordance with United Nations resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. It welcomed efforts to establish a regional security system ensuring security for all, and efforts to revive the Syrian-Israeli and Lebanese-Israeli tracks.
The statement concluded by calling on all countries to join the international momentum to ensure peace and security for all peoples of the Middle East, and to achieve mutual recognition and full regional integration.
The conference built on the one held last July under the joint auspices of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the French Republic, as part of ongoing international efforts and diplomatic initiatives aimed at enabling the two-state solution and mobilising international recognition of the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state.
