New York: Oman affirms commitment to protecting rights of older persons
The Sultanate of Oman affirmed that care for the elderly is a national priority rooted in the values of Omani society and Oman Vision 2040.
This was stated in Oman's address to a high-level UN meeting on ageing, delivered by Ambassador Maysa bint Zahran Al Raqishi, member of Oman’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
The Ambassador said that Oman continues to strengthen the legislative and institutional framework supporting the elderly by enacting laws and implementing policies aimed at ensuring an inclusive and safe environment, promoting integration into society and providing various forms of care and support, in line with regional and international approaches.
She added that Oman has taken several measures, including developing the social protection system, approving financial assistance for the elderly, issuing regulations governing care in alternative families, and providing assistance devices. In addition, day-care centres have been established that address psychological and social needs.
She called for accelerating efforts to develop a binding international instrument to protect and promote the rights of the elderly, ensuring their dignity and well-being. She affirmed Oman’s full support for the outcomes of the meeting and its readiness to cooperate with Member States, UN agencies and all partners to build a more just and inclusive future for all age groups.
