Oman affirms commitment to UN goals and to promoting international peace

25 October 2025

The Sultanate of Oman affirmed its steadfast belief in the goals and principles of the United Nations Charter and its continued support for the organisation’s efforts to maintain international peace and security, promote international cooperation for sustainable development, and protect human rights.

Marking United Nations Day, observed annually on October 24, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Omar Alkathiri, said that under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Oman believes in the importance of multilateral action as a means to achieve a just and lasting peace. He added that Oman attaches great importance to promoting dialogue, understanding, and human coexistence, and to upholding the principles of justice and mutual respect among nations.

In a statement to the Oman News Agency, he said that Oman continues to make positive contributions within the United Nations system by supporting development efforts, humanitarian initiatives, and active participation in addressing regional and global issues. This reflects Oman’s foreign policy based on moderation, cooperation, and peace, he added.

He affirmed that this day represents an opportunity to renew the collective commitment to the noble goals of the United Nations and to work together for a safer, fairer, and more sustainable future for generations to come.

UN Day 2025

The marking  of UN Day coincides this year with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN's international charter on 24 October 24, 1945, amid calls to strengthen global partnerships to confront shared challenges.

United Nations Day serves as an occasion to renew commitment to the principles upon which the organisation was founded—chief among them peace, development, and human rights.

In a statement, Secretary-General António Guterres said that the United Nations remains the only platform for dialogue and peace, especially amid regional tensions, adding that its establishment eight decades ago was a promise of peace, dignity, and prosperity for all peoples, embodying faith in fundamental human rights, the rule of law, justice, and social progress.

He noted that the world today faces grave challenges—from conflicts and climate change to widening inequality, growing poverty, and emerging threats such as artificial intelligence—while stressing that humanity also has unprecedented opportunities to build a better future.
