Oman at meeting of UNESCO's World Heritage Committee
The Sultanate of Oman is participating in the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), currently taking place at the UNESCO headquarters in the French capital, Paris.
Oman’s delegation is headed by Ambassador Amina Albalushi, Oman's Permanent Representative to UNESCO.
During the session, they are discussing the inscription of more than 30 new sites on the World Heritage List, in addition to reviewing the conservation status of more than 250 sites already on the list, to assess the environmental and developmental challenges they face.
The programme includes working sessions that focus on the impact of climate change on heritage sites, ways to enhance community involvement in their protection, the development of sustainable management tools, measures to safeguard sites at risk, and the evaluation of national and international plans to preserve the outstanding universal value of listed sites.
Oman’s participation reaffirms its commitment to protecting cultural and natural heritage, passing that heritage on to future generations, strengthening Oman's presence in international cultural forums, and supporting its current and future World Heritage nominations. It also reflects Oman’s dedication to the principles of the International Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
Oman has successfully registered several sites on the World Heritage List, including Bahla Fort in 1987; the archaeological sites of Bat, Al Khutm and Al Ayn in 1988; the Aflaj irrigation system of Oman, comprising five Omani aflaj, in 2006; the Land of Frankincense sites in 2000; and the ancient city of Qalhat in 2018.
