The Sultanate of Oman reaffirmed its longstanding and active role in supporting the security and safety of regional and international maritime navigation, recognising the vital importance of these sea lanes as lifelines for global trade and energy, and the legal, security and humanitarian responsibilities they entail.

This came in a statement delivered by Ambassador Omar Said Omar Alkathiri, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations in New York, during a high-level session of the UN Security Council in New York on “Strengthening maritime security through international cooperation for global stability”.

In his statement, the Ambassador underscored the importance of respecting international law, promoting preventive diplomacy, and strengthening multilateral cooperation to help safeguard strategic waterways and uphold international peace and security.
