Kenya: Oman and Korea sign environmental cooperation agreement

11 December 2025

The Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Korea signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening relations and developing cooperation in the fields of environment, climate change and sustainable development. The signing took place on the margins of the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi.

The MoU seeks to establish a long-term partnership based on equality and mutual interests. It supports efforts to protect the environment, ensure the well-being of present and future generations and promote joint action at the bilateral and multilateral levels to confront rising global environmental challenges. This reflects the commitment of both countries to advance their environmental partnership and expand areas of cooperation.

The MoU was signed on behalf of Oman by Dr Abdullah Bin Ali Al Amri, President of the Environment Authority  and on behalf of Korea by Koem Hanssen, Vice Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment.

It covers key areas of cooperation including air quality management, water resource management, pollution control, biodiversity protection, combating desertification and halting land degradation. It also includes strengthening the circular economy, waste management and recycling, improving responses to climate change such as carbon-reduction technologies and adaptation infrastructure, and supporting the transition to a green economy including hydrogen and green buildings.

The memorandum also provides for cooperation through information exchange, expert exchanges, staff training, development of joint projects and the organisation of seminars and workshops to support the sharing of experience between the two countries.
