A delegation from the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO)<\/a>, headed by Dr Salem bin Mohammed Al Malik<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, visited the Dhofar Governorate to explore a number of tourism, heritage and natural attractions as part of the ‘Bridges of Civilisation’ programme, hosted by Oman until August 28.<\/p>\n

The programme, launched by ICESCO\u2019s General Secretariat of National Commissions and Conferences, aims to strengthen cultural communication between ICESCO and its Member States. It also seeks to showcase Dhofar Governorate\u2019s cultural, heritage and tourism attractions and explore national experiences in preserving heritage and using it to support sustainable tourism development.<\/p>\n

The visit programme included a number of archaeological, historical and natural sites, as well as opportunities to learn about local environments and various forms of tourism. The delegation visited the Land of Frankincense<\/a> sites, learning about their historical and civilisational significance in addition to frankincense production methods and the importance of frankincense in the Governorate\u2019s cultural and economic heritage. The programme also featured local crafts and products, markets, events and community experiences.<\/p>\n

\"ICESCO<\/p>\n

Further visits to a number of natural sites, included Wadi Darbat, Ain Razat, Wadi Nahayz, Ain Sahalnoot, Al Mughsail and Al Dahariz beaches and Jebel Samhan, highlighted the environmental and geographical diversity of the Dhofar Governorate.<\/p>\n

Dr Salem bin Hilal Al Habsi, Director of the General Secretariat of National Commissions and Conferences at ICESCO<\/a>, said the ‘Bridges of Civilisation’ programme reflects the organisation\u2019s approach to strengthening cultural diplomacy and direct engagement with Member States. It also provides an opportunity to learn about their national experiences and civilisational and cultural assets and explore opportunities for cooperation and joint initiatives.<\/p>\n

Dr Al Habsi explained that the visit to the Dhofar Governorate provided an opportunity to learn about an integrated model combining cultural and natural heritage, tourism and development. It also highlights the importance of utilising civilisational and natural assets to promote cultural tourism and support the creative economy.<\/p>\n

Talal bin Humaid Al Khasibi, Director General of Heritage and Tourism in the Dhofar Governorate, said the visit reflects strengthening cooperation with international organisations and institutions as well as the Governorate\u2019s rich heritage, cultural and tourism assets. He highlighted the importance of such visits in showcasing Omani heritage and national experiences in preserving and sustainably utilising heritage.<\/p>\n

He noted that the selection of Dhofar Governorate as part of the ‘Bridges of Civilisation’ programme reflects its historical and cultural significance. The Land of Frankincense sites stand as evidence of the depth of the commercial and cultural exchanges that took place in the region over the centuries. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships with ICESCO and relevant international organisations to exchange expertise and develop joint initiatives and programmes.<\/p>\n

The visit highlights the Dhofar Governorate\u2019s unique integration of heritage, natural and tourism assets. This enhances its position as a destination for sustainable cultural and nature-based tourism, contributes to showcasing Omani heritage, and strengthens its international presence.<\/p>\n
