The Sultanate of Oman participated in a high level event at the United Nations<\/a> headquarters in New York marking the fifth International Day for Countering Hate Speech.<\/p>\n

The event was jointly organised by the Kingdom of Morocco and the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect.<\/a><\/p>\n

In his address, Ambassador Omar Alkathiri, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations,<\/a> reaffirmed Oman’s steadfast commitment to promoting tolerance, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect as values deeply rooted in the country’s national identity and reflected in its policies and institutions.<\/p>\n

He noted that, under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik,<\/a> Oman continues to support dialogue, moderation and peaceful engagement at both the national and international levels, guided by its longstanding approach of fostering understanding among peoples and cultures and promoting the values of peace and coexistence.<\/p>\n

The Ambassador highlighted national initiatives aimed at strengthening religious and cultural coexistence, including efforts to support freedom of belief and cultural diversity, educational and awareness programmes that promote dialogue, understanding and digital responsibility among young people, and cooperation with international partners and United Nations institutions to counter incitement and advance intercultural dialogue.<\/p>\n

He also reaffirmed Oman’s support for the United Nations Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech<\/a> and its belief in the importance of multilateral efforts to address the root causes of hate speech and build more inclusive and cohesive societies.<\/p>\n

The Ambassador drew attention to the Muscat Plan, launched recently by Oman<\/a> in partnership with the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Network of Religious and Traditional Peacemakers. The initiative seeks to empower religious, traditional and community leaders to contribute to preventing hate speech and extremism while promoting dialogue, mutual respect and social cohesion.<\/p>\n

Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Alkathiri reiterated Oman’s commitment to working with the international community to foster a culture of respect and understanding and to ensure that diversity remains a source of strength and enrichment for societies.<\/p>\n
