{"id":26681,"date":"2025-07-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fm.gov.om\/26681\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T11:50:34","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T11:50:34","slug":"paris-oman-receives-unesco-certificate-for-historic-manuscript","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fm.gov.om\/en\/26681\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris: Oman receives UNESCO certificate for historic manuscript"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Sultanate of Oman has officially received the certificate of inscription into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/memory-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Memory of the World Programme<\/a> of the manuscript \u201cAl-N\u016bniyya Al-Kubr\u0101\u201d by the renowned Omani navigator Ahmed bin Majid.<\/p>\n<p>The presentation took place during a meeting between Amina Albalushi, Oman\u2019s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, and Dr Tawfik Jelassi, UNESCO\u2019s Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, at the organisation\u2019s headquarters in Paris, France.<\/p>\n<p><img data-opt-id=1161695839  fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-87199 size-fusion-800\" src=\"https:\/\/mlzlkxvcvliz.i.optimole.com\/cb:ghTT.1f99\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/g:sm\/f:best\/https:\/\/www.fm.gov.om\/wp-content\/uploads\/UNESCO-2-800x491-1.jpg\" alt=\"Oman receives UNESCO certificate for inscription of 'Al-Nuniyya Al-Kubra' in Memory of the World register\" width=\"800\" height=\"491\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This achievement crowns the efforts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/mcsy.om\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth<\/a>, in collaboration with the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, and the Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, to highlight the manuscript\u2019s historical and scientific value.<\/p>\n<p>Al-N\u016bniyya Al-Kubr\u0101 is considered one of the most significant works in the fields of navigation and maritime sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The manuscript is distinguished by its advanced geographical vision, proposing a novel division of the Earth into fourteen regions encompassing both hemispheres\u2014surpassing the traditional division limited to seven regions in the Northern Hemisphere alone.<\/p>\n<p>It also contains detailed descriptions of the societies encountered by the author and his navigational crew, alongside rich documentation of maritime life, including marine species and natural phenomena.<\/p>\n<p>UNESCO\u2019s Memory of the World Programme, launched in 1992, aims to safeguard humanity\u2019s documentary heritage from loss and oblivion.
