The Sultanate of Oman joins its fellow member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council<\/a>\u00a0 in celebrating the 44th anniversary of its founding on May 25, 1981.<\/p>\n

The establishment of the GCC marked a milestone towards achieving integration among its six member states, in a manner that serves the interests of their peoples and fulfils their aspirations for stability, prosperity, progress and development.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the day he assumed leadership of the Sultanate, on January 11, 2020, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik<\/a> affirmed Oman\u2019s support for the Council, stating: \u201cWe will continue, along with our brothers, the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council, to contribute to advancing cooperation among our countries, in order to fulfil the aspirations of our peoples and to push the achievements of the GCC further forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oman remains firmly committed to the principles and objectives of the Council, contributing to the development of its decisions and initiatives, supporting mechanisms for economic integration, coordinating political positions, and promoting cultural and social cooperation.<\/p>\n

This stems from Oman\u2019s belief that the unity of the Council is a cornerstone for the region\u2019s resilience in the face of rapid and shifting global changes.<\/p>\n

Sheikh Ahmed Almaskari, Head of the Foreign Ministry’s GCC Department, told the Oman News Agency that the establishment of the GCC in 1981 marked a defining moment in joint Arab action and laid the foundation for a strong and effective framework for regional cooperation.<\/p>\n

He said that since its launch, the Council has made significant progress in strengthening the foundations of integration and coordination among its member states, drawing on historical ties and shared interests among their peoples.<\/p>\n

He added that among the Council\u2019s most prominent political achievements is its ability to unify positions at regional and international forums and its role in promoting peace and stability in the region.<\/p>\n

On the economic front, the customs union, the Gulf common market, the regional electricity grid, and transport projects stand out as outcomes of institutional cooperation, he added.<\/p>\n

He noted that despite these achievements, the Council has faced challenges, including differing political perspectives, economic difficulties, and rapidly evolving regional dynamics. However, the Council’s established mechanisms for dialogue and consultation have helped overcome many obstacles with a spirit of responsibility and wisdom, he added.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that the founding ambitions of the Council were, and remain, extensive. Much has been realised, yet certain areas still require stronger momentum and faster implementation, particularly in the economic, social and legislative spheres.<\/p>\n

He added that the Council remains a dynamic and evolving platform, reflecting the political will of its member states to continue building and enhancing integration.<\/p>\n

On the Council\u2019s role in promoting stability in the Gulf and wider Middle East, Sheikh Ahmed said that the GCC plays a pivotal role in strengthening collective security, countering sources of threat, and advancing peaceful solutions to regional crises.<\/p>\n

He added that it also works to deepen strategic partnerships with global powers and regional actors to ensure balanced interests and safeguard the security and stability of the Gulf and the region.<\/p>\n

He noted that the GCC adopts a responsible approach based on respect for international law and non-interference in the internal affairs of states. It seeks to actively contribute to conflict resolution through mediation and preventive diplomacy. Examples include its consistent emphasis on the centrality of the Palestinian cause and its rejection of all forms of escalation and foreign interference in the region.<\/p>\n

Regarding Oman\u2019s role in advancing Gulf cooperation, especially in areas requiring consensus and reconciliation, Sheikh Ahmed said that the Sultanate has consistently pursued a foreign policy based on dialogue and balance.<\/p>\n

Oman has worked sincerely to bridge differences and reinforce Gulf unity. He affirmed that Oman is committed to supporting the GCC\u2019s journey at all stages and encourages initiatives that strengthen joint Gulf action, particularly on issues that require consensual solutions and thoughtful understanding.<\/p>\n

He explained that the Council\u2019s future depends on adapting to global developments through modernising mechanisms, activating integration tools, and advancing unified policies in strategic areas such as cybersecurity, climate change, and sustainable development.<\/p>\n

He also highlighted the importance of continuing efforts towards a fully integrated economic union that ensures security and prosperity for the peoples of the member states.<\/p>\n

On the future of Gulf integration in areas such as the digital economy, food security, and renewable energy, he noted that these sectors are top priorities on the current Gulf cooperation agenda. Coordination in these areas is expected to see tangible progress through unified strategies and innovative initiatives, he added.<\/p>\n

Sheikh Ahmed concluded by affirming that the Sultanate of Oman believes that unity and integration within the Gulf family\u2014based on shared destiny and mutual respect\u2014are fundamental pillars for achieving security, stability, and development in the region.<\/p>\n
